Multitasking on your Nokia Lumia 900

Multitasking is a key feature and is built into Windows Phone 7.5. It ca be accessed simply by pressing and holding the Back button, that's the one in the left-hand corner of the device, at any time. This will cause a screen to appear with thumbnails of your six most recently active applications, frozen at the point you last left them. Touch one of these and you'll jump straight back in.

Now, you may find that the odd app doesn't pop up on your Nokia Lumia 900 multitasking list. This isn't a bug in the phone, it's actually because the app builder hasn't added multitasking support!

Now, the question is, why would you want to use multitasking on your Nokia Lumia 900? Well, it's not immediately obvious so we've pulled together a few user examples that we think nicely illustrate the point.

Multitasking on your Nokia Lumia 900: Photo flicking

You're in the camera app flicking back through your photos in reverse chronicle order after a fine day of heavy snapping. Suddenly you're interrupted by an email. Now, if you quit out of the camera app you'll lose your position and will have to start again in the camera app or open up the Pictures app and try to find where you were. The more photos you took, the more time and concentration that will take. With multitasking, the precise point you left your nostalgic browsing has been preserved, so you can continue where you left off after answering that message.

Multitasking on your Nokia Lumia 900: Playing games

So, you've loaded the latest Xbox Live game on your Nokia Lumia 900, something engrossing like Contract Killer, when you get a text message. Do you come out of the game, revert to the Menu screen or just ignore the text? Well, simply hit the home button to exit to the start screen, deal with your text, then press and hold the Back button. The precise moment you exited the game will be preserved, ready to jump back in at a moment's notice.

Multitasking on your Nokia Lumia 900: Note taking

You just noted down an important reference number or some other piece of information in Evernote or the Windows Phone Calendar To-do section. Now you're relaying that information to someone else through an email or a text message but the problem is you can't remember what the important piece of information was.

Rather than abandon the open text message and go through a laborious process of closing and opening separate applications, simply hold the Back button and scroll to the Evernote note. Because this is an accurate thumbnail of the open note, you'll see your information without having to go into the app. Simply return to the open message and re-enter with your memory refreshed!

Multitasking on your Nokia Lumia 900: Orienteering

You're zoomed in on a the location of a meeting point in Nokia Maps, and you're trying to talk another attendee in through WhatsApp or SMS. As before, simply enter the multitasking menu to reference back to the map, quickly note the nearby roads and landmarks and quickly return to your messaging to relay the information while it's fresh in mind.

Use Windows Phone Groups on your Nokia Lumia 900

To create a new Group is easier than you think. It's based around the People Tile on the Start screen. Tap People and this will open the Nokia Lumia 900’s People Hub. Then, tap New button at the bottom of the screen – this is simply a case of tapping the ‘+’ symbol – and then, on the page that opens up, just tap the option to create New Group.

Now, give your Group a name that means something to you using the onscreen keyboard and then tap the Save button at the bottom of the screen to create it. Once the Group has been created, you can add it to your Start Screen as a shortcut simply by tapping the Pin button at the bottom of the screen.

With your Group created, you can now start adding contacts to it. To do this, just tap to open your new Group – located at the top of your Contacts list – then tap Edit at the bottom of the screen – illustrated with an icon of a pen – and then tap the option labelled Add a Contact near the top of the screen.

You can then just scroll through your contacts list and tap each contact you want to add to the group on your Nokia Lumia 900. You can then use the Group to send texts, emails and updates to the entire group in one fell swoop, as well as stay up to date on all their own updates via your new Windows Phone Start screen Live Tile.

This is a quick and easy tip that helps you get more from your Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone.

factory reset Nokia Lumia 800 and 900

Whether you want to sell your Lumia 800 / 900 or simply want to start afresh, we show you step-by-step how to hard reset it to factory settings.

There are two ways to reset the Nokia Lumia 800 and 900. The first is to navigate through the menus:

Step 1. Starting from the home screen, swipe left or press the arrow which points right.

Step 2. Scroll down and tap on Settings - it has an icon like a cog.

Step 3. Scroll down and tap 'about'

Step 4. Tap the 'reset your phone' button. If you can't see this button, simply scroll down.

Step 5. A warning will tell you that all your data and apps will be erased, so ensure that you have backed up your phone, or at least your photos and contact details, before tapping the 'yes' button to confirm you want to completely reset your smartphone.

The other way to reset a Lumia 800 or 900 is using its buttons.

Step 1. With the phone switched off, press and hold the volume down, camera and power buttons (the only one not to press is the volume up button which is closest to the top of the handset).

Step 2. Your phone will vibrate. Release the power button (the middle of the three) but continue to hold the other two for five seconds.

Step 3. The smarphone will reset and will be restored to factory settings.

Turn Your Nokia Lumia 900 Into A Podcast Player

Enter the Music & Videos tile on your Nokia Lumia 900 home page and what do you see? Music, videos (of course), radio and marketplace. Oh, but what's that slap bang in the middle?

Yep, we often overlook the podcasts bit too. It's there though, and it's designed to help you keep on top of all your favourite podcast subscriptions. But how do you subscribe?

Step 1: Boot up Zune
In order to get those podcasts flowing to your Nokia Lumia 900, you'll need to hook it up to the Zune software on your PC. If you haven't got Zune installed, you can download it here.
Step 2: Add podcasts
Once Zune has booted up, head on over to the podcasts section. To add a subscription, click 'add a new podcast' and paste in the URL for your podcast of choice.
Step 3: Define the storage limits
If you're not careful you're going to be clogged up with podcasts in no time, so take a little time to set the storage limits for each podcast subscription. You might want to keep long form stuff around for a suitable occasion, but daily news updates can be jettisoned pretty quickly.
There you go. Easy. But what about us Mac owners? We don't get a version of Zune to call our own, unfortunately. What we do get is the Windows Phone 7 Connector, which might not be as pretty or fully featured, but is actually a bit faster.
You can also access and set up your podcast subscriptions from this program. In fact, you can synchronise your podcasts with your iTunes account, which is a pretty cool feature.
Of course, many people prefer to avoid computer-based solutions altogether, and just want to be able to pull in podcasts on the very device they use to listen. Such people are in luck, as there are plenty of podcast-friendly apps for you Nokia Lumia 900. SimpliRSS lets you download podcasts directly to your Lumia, and it's completely free.
If you choose to go the app route, do be sure to stick to Wi-Fi for you podcast downloads, or you might have a nasty surprise when your phone bill comes through at the end of the month.
